What are the biggest trends impacting your community right now?
Two things come to mind. One is the shift to cloud-based media operations. You might think that should be old news by now, but it’s not. Although the shift has been going full-tilt since the pandemic, it’s still very much a work in progress. The second is dealing with the ever-changing landscape of streaming services that we must accommodate. It seems like every day there’s a new service, a merged service, a renamed/re-factored service to deal with.
What challenges does the community need to overcome, because of these trends?
Again, two things from where I sit. On the cloud side of things, we need it to be much easier than it is today to discover and control media services and devices, regardless of where they reside. And all of these devices and services should co-exist, again, regardless of where they are. The panacea I’d like to see us reach is one where everything “just works” regardless of vendor or platform. On the streaming side of things, we need to make it much simpler to provision and manage these services, so that this can all be automated. While we’re at it, securing them is a must as well.
What’s one thing you wish the community knew about?
I wish more folks in our industry knew about some of the great work being done by organizations like SMPTE and the many vendors and media companies who really feel the pain and dedicate resources to address challenges like these..
What discussions should they be having with the exhibitors?
Ask vendors how they are making it easy to stitch together a true multi-vendor, multi-platform ecosystem of media devices and services. Tell them how important this is. You’ll get a great appreciation for the true nature of the challenge by getting viewpoints from folks who are looking at the problem from different angles.
